How to Hide Your Router's SSID

Wireless network routers identify themselves by broadcasting a unique identification for the network. This prevents a device from connecting to the wrong network accidentally. The unique ID is known as a service set identifier, or SSID. Hiding your router's SSID can make it slightly more difficult for people to detect or connect to your wireless network.

Instructions

    • 1

Access your wireless router's administration control panel. On most routers, you can connect to it via a web browser by typing the router's IP address into the address bar. You will need to enter the administrator name and password to access the control panel.

    • 2

Locate the wireless networking options. On many wireless routers, there is a series of tabs or buttons that separate the various controls to make finding the desired settings easier. The section with the SSID is often labeled "Wireless" or "Wireless Settings." If you cannot determine which section is required, click on each section and look for a setting called "SSID Broadcast" or something similar.

    • 3

Turn off the SSID Broadcast. Broadcasting the SSID is what makes the router's SSID show up as an available network to wireless devices. If the device is not broadcasting the SSID, then the router and its SSID will be hidden from view.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hiding the SSID does not provide additional security. Various wireless tools can still detect the router's wireless signals even if the SSID is not being broadcast. To secure a wireless network, you must enable wireless encryption.
