Putting highlights in your hair can instantly make a casual hairstyle stand out. Unlike visible highlights, peekaboo highlights are hidden underneath your hair. The highlights become visible when you move or part your hair in a certain way. Instead of paying a hairstylist to place the hidden highlights in your hair, you can save money and do the job yourself. With a highlighter kit and the correct application method, you can transform your look right at home.
- T-shirt or barber cape
- Disposable gloves
- Rat-tail comb
- Hair clip or hair tie
- Coloring brush
Cut foil into strips that are approximately 3 inches wide and 1 inch longer than the length of your hair. Cut one strip of foil for each highlight you plan to put in.
Put on an old T-shirt or a barber cape and protect your hands with disposable gloves.
Prepare your highlighting color according to the packaging instructions. This may include mixing the color with a developing agent in a small tray that is provided in most commercial highlighting kits.
Secure the top layer of your hair on top of your head, so you have easy access to the hair underneath. Make a circular part in the hair on top of your head with the back of a rat-tail comb. Use a clip or hair tie to secure the hair on top of your head.
Section off a 1-inch piece of hair that you want to highlight. Adjust the width of the hair, to make the highlight more or less noticeable.
Place a foil strip under the hair strands you want to color. The foil must reach from the roots of your hair all the way to the tips.
Dip a coloring brush in the dye. Swipe the brush over the hair strands. Saturate the hair strands completely. Start at the roots and move downward to the tips.
Fold the foil strip in half with the hair packed inside it. Keep folding the foil in half until it meets your scalp. Fold the open sides of the foil inward to create a small package. Allow the highlighting color to work on your hair for the duration mentioned on the package instructions. Highlight as many strands in this fashion as you desire.
Unfold the foil, starting at the first piece you put in your hair. Wash the dye out of your hair with water. When the water runs clear, apply a conditioner for colored hair. Rinse the conditioner and style your hair as normal.
