How to Format a Hard Drive on a Dell B130 & Reinstall Windows From a Hard Drive

The Windows operating system installed on your Dell Inspiron B130 laptop may crash frequently or take much longer than normal to boot up if your registry data has been modified or the computer has contracted a virus. As a precaution, Dell laptops include a hidden hard drive partition with an option to format the hard drive. If you want to wipe out your current data and start over with a clean slate, the recovery program on the partition lets you reinstall the Windows operating system.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug any network cables or additional devices, such as a flash drive or printer, attached to your B130 laptop. Open the "Start" menu and click "Restart."

    • 2

Press the "F8" key while the operating system is restarting. Use the down-arrow key to scroll through the "Advanced Boot Options" menu and highlight the entry labeled "Repair Your Computer." Tap the "Enter" key to open the repair screen.

    • 3

Open the drop-down menu and select your desired language option from the list of languages. Click "Next" and "OK." Click the button labeled "Dell Factory Image Restore" and click "Next."

    • 4

Click the check box near the bottom of the screen labeled "Reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition," then click "Next." Wait for the computer to restart after the Windows reinstallation process finishes. Click the "Finish" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • Besides the hidden hard drive partition, your B130 laptop also includes a recovery CD for reinstalling the Windows operating system. Insert the recovery CD into the disk drive and restart the laptop to access the recovery program. Tap a key when the "Press any key" prompt appears on the screen and click "Install Now." Click "Next" at each prompt and then "Finish" to format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.
