How to Install a Snap-On Metal Edging Counter

Metal edging made for counters gives the sides of counters a finished appearance, while also protecting the counter edges from potential damage. As the name implies, snap-on metal edging allows the edging to snap on to the sides of the counter without needing additional hardware. Though you can install the metal edging alone, some additional securing ensures a lasting counter finish. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of each section of the counter where you want to install the metal edging. Buy a piece of edging that fits each edge of the counter if possible, or cut it down to size with tin snips.

    • 2

Apply waterproof sealant to the edges of the counter if there is exposed wood. Allow the sealant to dry four to five hours before installing the snap-on metal edging.

    • 3

Line the first piece of metal edging up with the counter it fits. Set the top of the metal piece on the top edge of the counter, pressing the edging downward and inward toward the counter until it snaps into place over the counter's edge.

If you have a hard time getting the metal to snap into place, fold a piece of cloth over several times to create a cushion. Hold it against the metal edging and tap over the cloth gently with a hammer to force the edging onto the counter.

Remove the metal snap-on edging completely from the counter if the edging won’t remain in place. Apply metal adhesive to the counter edge and return the edging to the counter. Hold it against the counter for five minutes to ensure a good hold.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need to install metal edging to a curved countertop, work the metal pieces with pliers to bend them to the curve of the counter.
