How to Grow an Onion From the Kitchen
Onions are delicious in many dishes and commonly purchased in a grocery store, but you can save money by growing your own. If you do not have room for a garden, certain onions, such as spring onions, grow indoors using a few basic gardening supplies and methods. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Egg carton
- Potting soil
- Spring onion seeds
- Gallon-sized plastic bag
- Pot
- Spade

Fill the cups of an empty egg carton with potting soil, then push an onion seed one-half inch into the center of each cup. Cover the seeds with more soil.

Pour one-eighth cup of water into each cup to moisten the soil, then slip the egg carton into a gallon-sized plastic bag. Seal the bag.

Place the bag with the enclosed onion seeds into a warm, dark location for 3 days to sprout the seeds.

Fill an 18-inch wide pot with potting soil, and place the pot onto a saucer to protect your floor.

Dig 2-inch deep holes into the soil with a spade, then transfer one of the sprouted onion seeds into each hole. Cover the holes with soil, allowing the tip of each sprout to poke through the soil. Moisten the soil.

Place the pot with the spring onion sprouts into a warm, sunny location in your kitchen. Water the growing onions three times per week. Trim the tall green stalks for use once the spring onion plant is mature.

Cut, chop and dry spring onions to store them for later use.
Avoid using chemical fertilizers, which can be harmful to health.
