How to Finger Weave a Hat
Finger weaving is an ideal way to introduce beginners of all ages to the craft of knitting. Not only is it quick to learn, but it is easy to take with you anywhere because, unlike traditional knitting, it doesn’t require any tools. You can create a simple design, such as a scarf, in under an hour. Using the same principles and just a little more time, you can make a slightly more complex design, like a hat.

1
Tie the end of a ball of yarn into a knot and loop it around the thumb on your dominant hand. Turn your palm so that it faces you.
-
2
Weave the yarn through your fingers by taking the yarn behind your index finger, in front of your middle finger, behind your ring finger and in front of your pinkie finger. Loop the yarn around the back your pinkie and reverse the weave by taking the yarn to the front of your ring finger, behind your middle finger and end in front of your index finger.
-
-
3
Repeat the weave back and forth across your hand one more time. You will now have two loops across each finger and two behind each finger.
-
4
Take the bottom, front loop on the pinkie finger and pull it over the top loop and over the top of the pinkie finger. Release the loop behind the pinkie finger. Repeat on each finger.
-
5
Weave the yarn through the fingers once again, starting behind the index finger, over the front of the middle finger, behind the ring finger and over the pinkie finger. Loop around the pinkie to the back and pull the yarn in front of the ring finger, behind the middle finger and ending in front of the index finger.
-
6
Repeat pulling the bottom loop over the top loop and on each finger, starting with the pinkie. Continue weaving and pulling the bottom loop until you have about 60 inches of chain.
-
7
Cast off the end of the yarn chain after you have completed your last repetition of pulling the loops over the fingers by taking the single loop on your pinkie finger and moving it over to your ring finger. Take the bottom loop on your ring finger and move it over to the middle finger. Take the bottom loop on the middle finger and move it over to your index finger. Take the bottom loop on your index finger and pull it off of your finger, leaving one loop on your index finger.
-
8
Take the chain off of your finger, taking care to leave the last loop open. Trim the tail of yarn with a pair of scissors, leaving 5 inches of tail, and feed the tail through the remaining loop. Pull the tail tight to finish off the chain.
-
9
Coil the chain into hat shape with the tail end at the top of the hat. Fasten the coil chain together by sewing yarn through the edges of the chain every half inch. Tie a yarn pom-pom to the tail at the top of the hat.
