How to Make a Wine Glass Coaster

The coaster slips over the base of the glass.

Most coasters require that you pick them up separately from the glass or awkwardly hold them in place with your pinky finger when you move about a room. Napkins nicely fold around a glass but eventually turn into a soggy mess. If you are a wine drinker, you can solve this problem with a wine glass coaster. It slips over the base of your glass and stays there until you are ready to remove it.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Make a pattern for your wine glass coaster. Cut an 8-inch square from graph paper.

    • 2

Trace the pattern onto a piece of fabric with a pencil or marker. Make sure you trace on the side of the fabric that you do not want to show. Cut along the lines with scissors to get an 8-inch square of fabric.

    • 3

Fold the fabric square diagonally to make a right triangle. Make sure your traced outline is on the inside of the fold. Sew along the legs of the triangle to secure the fold. The legs are the two shorter sides of the triangle.

    • 4

Orient the triangle so that the 90-degree angle is at the bottom-left. Fold the top-left corner down to the bottom-left corner. Fold the bottom-right corner over to the bottom-left corner. In short, bring the two narrower corners of the triangle to the 90-degree corner to make a square.

    • 5

Sew around all four sides of the square to secure the folds. Slip the base of the wine glass into the crease that diagonally traverses the coaster.

Tips & Warnings

  • Double the diameter of the wine glass base to know what size square to start with for different sized coasters. For instance: for a 6-inch wine glass base, start with a 12-inch square.

  • Glue cork squares to the bottom of the coasters to make them slip resistant.
