Sewing a T-Shirt to a V-Neck

Ordinary T-shirts are available in a wide variety of colors.

Many people have dresser drawers full of unused T-shirts. Cotton T-shirts are often purchased at concerts, sporting events or souvenir shops. T-shirts usually have crew necklines and sometimes feel restrictive around the neck. Transforming an ordinary crew neck T-shirt into a V-neck gives an updated, more comfortable look. While it may be tempting to simply cut and tear a T-shirt to create a V-neckline, a more tailored look can be achieved. Even beginners should have no problem altering a T-shirt.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the neckband from the front of the T-shirt by taking out the stitching with a seam ripper. Begin at one shoulder, come around the front and end at the opposite shoulder. Do not remove the back section of the neckband. Leave the loose neckband hanging for now.

    • 2

Lay the T-shirt on a flat work surface with the front side facing up. Smooth out any wrinkles. Fold the shirt in half, towards the back. Line up the shoulders and sides and find the center point of the shirt front.

    • 3

Keep the shirt folded in half. Decide how low you want the V-neck to be. Make a small pen mark at this point on the shirt front. Using scissors, cut from the pen mark up to the shoulders on the shirt front only.

    • 4

Fold the loose portion of the neckband in half to find the center. Cut the center of the loose neckband to create two separate pieces.

    • 5

Pin the loose neckband pieces to the raw V-neck edges. Stretch the neckband pieces to extend the length of the raw V-neck and pin in place. Topstitch the neckband to the V-neck by hand or machine. Create a finished point by overlapping one neckband piece over the other. Use a blind stitch to join the two neckband pieces at the V-neck point.

Tips & Warnings

  • Work slowly when ripping out the seam stitches to avoid cutting the shirt fabric.

  • Use sharp scissors when making the v-neck.
