Making Costume Facial Hair

Making Costume Facial Hair thumbnail
Even women and children can get this five o'clock shadow.

Costumes give people the ability to transform into anyone else in the world, and oftentimes, people choose characters outside of their real age, gender, or time period. In such instances, masqueraders are challenged to conceal or exhibit certain features, such as facial hair. Pirates, hobos, and a slew of celebrity costumes wouldn’t be complete without an unshaved, stubbly appearance. Learn how to create the illusion of realistic facial hair with a few basic materials, one simple motion and five minutes of your time. Unlike adhesives, this makeup-based facial hair is easy and pain-free to remove.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry your face thoroughly.

    • 2

Dab one end of the stipple sponge into the cream makeup, picking up a light coating. Don't oversaturate the sponge.

    • 3

Quickly dab the sponge onto your face, starting at the chin and working down toward the neck and outward toward cheeks. Use a fast, short, blunt motion and don't press too firmly against the skin. Dab the sponge back into the makeup as necessary.

    • 4

Pull lips inward and lightly dab the makeup above your upper lip, keeping makeup away from your nostrils.

    • 5

Use a warm washcloth and makeup remover to wipe the stubble away.

Tips & Warnings

  • The coarse, wiry stipple sponge is available wherever costume makeup is sold.

  • Try mixing different colors-- such as yellow, gray and brown--to create different shades of stubble and add highlights and dimension.

  • Change the color of your existing facial hair with mascara in the appropriate shade. Use the mascara wand to brush the color into your beard and mustache.

  • Use an eyeliner pencil to draw a thin mustache above your upper lip.

  • Keep the sponge and makeup away from eyes, nose and lips to avoid irritation, discomfort or accidental ingestion.
