How to Use EMF to Detect Ghosts
EMF detectors, or electromagnetic field detectors, pick up electromagnetic fields and fluctuations. The theory behind using EMF detectors to search for ghosts is that paranormal activity may result in fluctuations of electromagnetic frequencies and other environmental changes. This hypothesis is the subject of severe skepticism and debate. There are many sources of electromagnetic field fluctuation such as home electronics, electrical wiring and electrical outlets. Before purchasing an EMF detector to search for ghosts, do some independent research on the reliability of such methods.

1
Purchase an EMF detector. The type of EMF detector you should select will depend on the electronics in your home or environment, the sophistication with which you desire to search for anomalies and your price range. Two of the more popular models for ghost hunting include the Gauss EMF meter and the AC Cell Sensor. These EMF detectors are used by the cast of the popular television show, "Ghost Hunters."

2
Not that kind of ghost. Get a base reading on your environment by sweeping the area in a grid formation and taking and recording readings on your EMF detector. Items in your home may automatically give off an EMF reading, so creating a solid base reading is important to determine if future readings are fluctuations or standard readings within your environment.

3
Go around your environment in a grid formation, scanning for electromagnetic field fluctuation. Using a grid formation is important so that you accurately survey your entire environment without re-tracing your steps.
-
4
Take notes during your scan of the room so that you can compare your base scan results with your additional scans. It may help to have an assistant take notes as you read them information from the EMF reader.
-
5
Compare your base readings with your updated readings. Take note of any areas where the readings differ and re-examine those areas as appropriate.

Tips & Warnings
Experts do not agree on the existence of ghosts or whether they can be detected with EMF readers. Additionally, keep in mind that there are several things that can cause an EMF reader to experience fluctuation other than paranormal activity.
EMF detectors are very sensitive to movement, so do not move your detector fast or you may compromise your results.
