How to Install Two Different GPUs

Your computer's graphic processing units control the visual display on your computer. You can install two video cards in your computer but you do not receive the benefit of doubled processing power because you cannot run two different cards in a SLI or Crossfire setup. You can, however, use the second card to power additional monitors. If possible, stay with the same card manufacturer such as two different Nvidia cards or two different ATI cards to cut down on driver issues.

Instructions

Shut off the computer and remove the power cable, any attached peripherals, your keyboard and mouse, and your monitor. You do not want anything attached to your system while you are performing the GPU installation.

    • 2

Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the case cover from your computer. If your case cover does not have access screws on the back, you may need to open a side panel, press a button or open a window on the case to access the computer tower.

    • 3

Remove two slot covers from the back of your computer case. Check the measurements on the case to make sure that both cards will fit in to your computer. Match the graphics cards up with the appropriate slot. The slot length needs to match the length of the metal tab on the side of the card. If you aren't sure which slot the cards use, just match the lengths.

Screw the cards in to the side of the case where the slot covers were located. Use the screws that previously held the covers in place. Connect power supply connectors to each of the video cards. Return the case cover to the chassis. Plug in all cables and peripherals. Boot the computer.

Open a Web browser and locate the appropriate drivers for each video card. These drivers should be available for download directly through the manufacturer's website. Double-click the drivers and follow the on-screen instructions to add the driver to your system. Restart your computer and install the second card's driver.
