How to Connect an Aquarium Overflow to a Sump
Adding an overflow box and sump to your aquarium is a ideal if you are planning on being more serious about keeping fish, as circulating the water helps keep the tank clear and makes adding chemicals easier and safer for the fish. If you already have a second tank under your display tank you are ready to connect the overflow and sump.

Attach the overflow box to your tank according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It should be positioned as far from your return pipe as possible.

Attach the hose to the bottom of the overflow box and run it down into your second tank, above the water line.

Install the sump pump according to the manufacturer’s instructions at the opposite side of your second tank. Again, this will ensure circulation.

Connect the return line from your sump pump to your display tank.

Fill the aquarium with water, and add water to the overflow box and sump pump as directed by the manufacturer.

Turn on your overflow box and sump pump and monitor carefully. You may need to add or remove water from the tank until equilibrium is reached.

Your second tank is out of sight, so is ideal for installing further aquarium equipment.
Check the flow rate on your sump pump and overflow box to ensure that they match.
