How to Add Your Friends' Addresses to AOL Instant Messenger

When you add your friends' names to your Buddy List, you can send them instant messages just by highlighting their names and clicking. You don't need to be an AOL member to use the Instant Messenger; you can download the software from the Web.

Instructions

  1. AOL Users

    • 1

      Sign on to AOL.

      Click My AOL on the toolbar.

      Click Buddy List.

      Click Create.

      Enter a Buddy List group name (perhaps "Tennis Partners" or "Family").

      Enter the AOL screen name or Instant Messenger name of your friend.

      Click Add Buddy.

      Click Save.

    Non-AOL Users

    • 9

      Open the Instant Messenger.

    • 10

      Click the List Setup tab.

      Click a folder or click the Add a Grpup button at the bottom of the window to add a new group.

      Click the Add Buddy button and enter your friend's Instant Messenger name or AOL screen name.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have a group name set up, all you have to do is add a name to that group.

  • You can have a group for names of work colleagues, personal friends or whomever else you desire.

  • You'll need to have your non-AOL friends tell you their Instant Messenger names - if your friends aren't on AOL, the name isn't necessarily part of their e-mail address.

  • Open the People menu and choose Find a Buddy to search for friends by e-mail address, name, or common interest.
