How to Copy an Object and Arrange It Into a Grid in Illustrator

The vector editing program Adobe Illustrator makes it easy to work with objects and arrange everything neatly to a grid. This works with guidelines, the exact specifications of which depend on your own preferences. You can customize everything, from the color to the size of the guidelines on the grid, allowing you to align everything neatly. Illustrator also displays exactly how far apart objects are when you are arranging them so you can work with precise measurements instead of guessing.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Adobe Illustrator and create a new document or open the existing document you want to work with.

    • 2

Click "Edit," "Preferences" and "Guides & Grids." Click the drop-down box next to "Color" and select the color you want for the grid. This will not be visible outside of Illustrator and is only there to help you, so pick a color most visible to you.

    • 3

Click "Lines" from the drop-down box next to "Style." Enter a numeric value next to "Gridline every" to define the intervals in which you want the lines on the grid to be placed. The smaller this value, the smaller your grid. Experiment with this until you are satisfied with the outcome.

    • 4

Enter a numeric value next to "Subdivisions" to define the intervals in which to subdivide the lines on your grid. Click the checkbox next to "Grids in Back" and click "OK."

    • 5

Click "View" and "Show Grid" to make it visible on your page. Left-click the object in your document you want to copy and arrange. The blue bounding box around it indicates whether an object is selected or not.

    • 6

Click "Edit," "Copy" or hold "Ctrl" and press "C" to copy the object. This works for an image, text or any other object on your page.

    • 7

Click "Edit," "Paste" or hold "Ctrl" and press "V" to paste the object on the page. Click "View," "Snap to Point" and left-click your objects before moving them around on the page.

    • 8

Use the grid guidelines on your page to arrange the objects. With the "Snap to Point" option enabled, a green line between the objects shows you exactly how far apart each object is from the others, allowing you to line everything up perfectly in a grid.
