Improve your credibility by taking a marine mechanic course.

Although you're not legally required to have a license to become a boat repairman, having certification will improve your skills and give you an edge against your competitors. When hiring someone to service their boats, boat owners want to know that they are dealing with a professional. Technical schools offer many specialized programs including marine mechanic programs that will provide you with proper certification. The American Boat and Yacht Council also offers the ABYC Technician Certification Program.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend a technical school that offers a program specializing in marine mechanics. Marine specialist programs prepare you for a career working with and repairing marine motors. Once you have completed the course, you’ll be equipped with a course completion certificate.

    • 2

Obtain further certification through the American Boat and Yacht Council. The ABYC offers classes for marine technicians involved in boat servicing and repair. To obtain this certification, you will need to study for the exam by taking the ABYC CD Course.

    • 3

Attend an exam day at an ABYC test center near you to complete the certification. Once you have successfully completed the exam, you will be rewarded with a certificate stating that you have successfully completed the course and are a certified boat repairman.

    • 4

Complete the ABYC exam every five years to keep your certification. It needs to be renewed after a five year period. To do this, you must complete an online recertification test.
