How to Make Aluminum Can Tiles

Cut the logos from your favorite soda cans for decorative tiles.

Turn boring, plain tiles into decorative works of art by covering them with aluminum from soda or beer cans. This type of aluminum is light enough to cut into squares and place on tiles. Since most soda and beer cans have decorative logos on them, you can create colorful tile patterns for a wall or floor using your favorite brands. You can also use the tiles as coasters for drinks.

Things You'll Need

  • Empty soda cans
  • Tin snips
  • White tiles

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse out the soda cans thoroughly.

    • 2

Use tin snips to carefully cut the top and the bottom of the can, leaving only the body of the can with the logo on it.

    • 3

Cut down the seam of the remaining soda can and press it flat. You should now have two square pieces of flattened soda can.

    • 4

Place a generous amount of silicone glue to the back of each aluminum square.

    • 5

Center the aluminum square over a plain white tile that is 4 inches by 4 inches and press it down onto the tile.

    • 6

Cover the tile with a book or other heavy object to help glue the aluminum to the tile for several hours.

    • 7

Brush a layer of varnish over the aluminum can tiles to prevent the edges from coming up over time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try decorating tiles with other materials such as decorative paper or consider painting the tiles.

  • Wear strong, protective gloves when cutting the cans as the edges will be extremely sharp.
