How to Keep Users From Minimizing or Closing a Browser thumbnail
Preventing users from closing or minimizing a browser requires special access and commands.

There may be times when computer network administrators want to keep users of individual PCs from minimizing or closing the web browser. There are a few programming "tricks" that can be used, depending on what browser and what version you're using. For Windows Internet Explorer, administrator access to certain settings enable you to prevent the closing of the browser window. Preventing minimization to the system tray is more complicated, however.

Instructions

  1. Keep Users from Closing a Browser

    • 1

Open the Group Policy settings. Click the Start menu and type "gpedit.msc" into the Search box.

    • 2

Use the Windows explorer window that opens in Windows version 7 or higher to access User Configuration, then Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Internet Explorer and finally Browser Menus.

    • 3

Disable the "Close" command and button by choosing the appropriate setting from the list--this could involve enabling the "Disable closing the browser" or "No browser close" command, depending on your system and browser version.

Enable "Kiosk" mode in Internet Explorer version 7 or higher by clicking the "Windows" key and "R" together.

    • 5

Type "iexplore -k" into the command box that opens and click "OK."

    • 6

Check the browser that opens--it should have no toolbars, including the buttons on the upper right that minimize, maximize and close the window. Note that the browser can be closed by clicking the "Alt" and "F4" keys together.

Tips & Warnings

  • You need to have administrator access to carry out most of these modifications.

  • Not every version of Windows or Internet Explorer has the necessary command functions.
