How to Convert Lossless to MP3 Using Nero

Converting lossless files in formats like WAV and FLAC to MP3 is useful if you want to reduce the size of an audio file without sacrificing too much quality. Although Nero Multimedia Suite primarily focuses on disc burning applications, the suite also includes an audio editor called Nero WaveEditor. Use this editor to import a lossless format so you can save it as an MP3 file.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Start menu and type "Nero WaveEditor" in the "Search programs and files" field. Click the "Nero WaveEditor" to launch the program.

    • 2

Click "File" and go to "Open." Locate and double-click the lossless file you wish to convert to MP3.

    • 3

Click "File" and click "Save As..." Specify a file name in the corresponding text box. Click the drop-down box next to "Save as type" and select "Lame mp3." Click the "Save" button to convert the lossless audio file to MP3 in your chosen location.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you aren't satisfied with the quality or file size of the converted MP3 file, open the lossless file again and click the "Options..." button in the "Save As" dialog. Choose "Constant bitrate" if you want better compatibility with different MP3 players; choose "Variable bitrate" if you want better overall audio quality.

  • If you selected constant bitrate, choosing a higher kBit value from the drop-down box will result in better audio quality and a larger file size. If you chose variable bitrate, choosing a lower value from the drop-down box will increase both the file size and audio quality.
