Check that the boiler's on/off switch is set to "On." Depending on the make and model of McLain boiler you use, the on/off switch is usually located prominently on the front and top of the boiler, near the display screen. Test the boiler again after verifying that the switch is set to the "On" position.

Verify that the boiler's thermostat is set above the air temperature. Just like a central heating system, McLain boilers will only activate if the thermostat is set above the ambient air temperature. Increase the thermostat temperature if it is currently set at or below the air temperature and see if the boiler works normally.

Check the fuel source. This step will vary somewhat depending on whether you use an oil- or natural gas-fired boiler. For oil boilers, check the oil tank and make sure it is not empty; refill it if it is empty. For natural gas boilers, check that the gas valve feeding the boiler is set to "Open" and contact your gas provider to make sure your service has not been interrupted.
