How to Embed YouTube Videos to Word 2011

Although Microsoft Word 2011 does not natively support embedding YouTube videos, you can work around this shortcoming by taking advantage of the multimedia support found in Microsoft PowerPoint. Unlike Word, you can embed a playable YouTube video within a presentation slide. That presentation can then in turn be embedded in a Word document, thus enabling YouTube playback from your document.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the YouTube video you want to embed in your Word 2011 document.

    • 2

Copy the URL of the video to your clipboard. Delete any part of the link that comes after the "&" symbol.

    • 3

Click "Start" and select "All Programs;" "Microsoft Office," and then "Microsoft Office PowerPoint."

    • 4

Click "File" and select "Options." Click the "Customize Ribbon" menu option in the left sidebar and then click the check box beside "Developer" in the "Customize the Ribbon" area.

    • 5

Click "New Slide" to create a second slide in the presentation. Select that slide once you have added it.

    • 6

Click the "Developer" tab in the PowerPoint ribbon, and then click the "More Tools" button that is represented with a hammer and wrench icon.

    • 7

Click "Shockwave Flash Object," and then click "OK."

    • 8

Click the "Properties" button in the "Developer" section of the ribbon.

    • 9

Paste the YouTube video URL in the "Movie" text box. Remove "watch=?" from the YouTube video URL. Close the "Properties" dialog once the link is configured. The slide will display a large "X" in place of the YouTube video.

    • 10

Return to the YouTube video in your Web browser and take a screen shot of the video.

    • 11

Embed the image of the YouTube video on the first slide of the presentation.

    • 12

Save the presentation and close PowerPoint.

    • 13

Click "Start" and select "All Programs," "Microsoft Office," and then "Microsoft Office Word." Create a new document or open the document in which you want to embed a YouTube video.

    • 14

Click the "Insert" tab in the Word ribbon, and then click "Object."

    • 15

Click the "Create from file" tab and then click "Browse." Select the PowerPoint presentation that you created earlier. The presentation, with playable YouTube video, will be embedded in your Word document and you can move the object to any location within the document.
