Sashing is a creative way of extending the length of your quilt.

Sashing is a term quilters use to refer to the space in between the patchwork on quilts. When planning your quilt pattern, you decide whether to sew patterned patches directly to on another, or whether you add spaces in between the patches. This technique allows you to frame a patch, highlighting your work. It also increases the size of the quilt, allowing you produce less patchwork to complete it.

Things You'll Need

  • Fabric strips, 1 inch wide
  • Sewing tape
  • Scissors
  • Quilting needle
  • Thread

Instructions

      Measure one side of your quilting patches using your sewing tape.

      Measure the sashing to equal the length of your patches.

    • 3

      Cut square pieces out of the same fabric, measuring 1 inch by 1 inch.

      Use a needle and thread to hand sew one piece of sashing between your patches.

    • 5

      Sew your square pieces into the gap left between the patches and sashing as you go along.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can choose to incorporate different colored sashing or squares when planning your quilt pattern.
