A model runway showcases the fashions where everyone can see.

A model runway often juts out into the audience to provide everyone with a better view of what the models are wearing. Transforming a typical stage into a model runway can take extra work and preparation to give the audience the same effect. You need to change the shape of the stage with risers and ensure the models have ample lighting as well to better showcase the clothing.

Things You'll Need

  • Risers
  • Curtains
  • Floor spotlights
  • Track lighting
  • Neutral background
  • Video screens

Instructions

    • 1

Extend the stage out from the middle using risers to create a runway at least 20 feet long to provide ample room for the models to walk. An appropriate width for the runway is at least 6-feet wide.

    • 2

Hang curtains down from the edges of the risers to hide the structures beneath the structures. This keeps the setup from distracting from the models on the runway.

    • 3

Set up floor spotlights along the edges of the risers to shine up at the models. These lights should be sufficiently bright, but not so bright that they blind the models.

    • 4

Hang track lighting above the risers, lining them up down the center of the risers from front to back. Position the lights so they will fill in the gaps that the stage lighting and floor spotlights leave. A successful model show requires that the lighting gives the audience a good look at the fashions.

    • 5

Hang a neutral background near the back end of the runway. The purpose of the model runway is to place the focus on the models and what they are wearing. The neutral background provides contrast to the fashions. Black, gold or off-white serve as suitable colors unless those colors are part of the fashions.

    • 6

Position large video screens on either side of the runway where the models enter the runway. Lighting these screens with the logos of the sponsors or the name of the fashion show provides publicity to sponsors and finishes setting the backdrop for the fashion show.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the risers are completely level so the models won't trip over uneven edges or gaps between the risers.
