Use InDesign for more creative control over your resume.

Adobe InDesign gives you increased control over typography and text placement than standard word processing programs. When you make a resume in InDesign, you have the option of exporting your resume to PDF and layering images or logos in your resume.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch InDesign and go to "File," then select "New." Select "Document." A new document menu opens.

    • 2

Select a page size from the menu. For a resume, use 8.5 x 11.

    • 3

Select the "T" from the toolbar, which is the Type tool. The cursor will change to a "T."

    • 4

Click where you want your text to begin and hold the mouse button down while you drag the cursor to the bottom right. This creates a text box. The outline of the box stays on screen when you release the mouse.

    • 5

Type your resume text. For maximum control over your layout, make separate text boxes for each section of your resume. For example, place your contact information into one box and type your experience and education into separate boxes. Adjust font styles and sizes in the toolbar at the top of the InDesign interface.

    • 6

Adjust each text box independently until your resume is laid out the way you want. Make boxes larger or smaller, offset them, or set different fonts in each box. If you're a graphic designer or you work in a creative field experiment with color and advanced type setting controls like kerning and leading.

Place images or logos. Go to "File," then select "Place." Select the image file you want to place from the file navigation menu that appears. Click where you want the image to appear. The image will appear on the page. Press and hold the Shift key, then drag the image from one of its corners to increase or decrease its size. Size the image to fit the design of your resume.

Click "File," then select "Save As." Select a file type, then click "Save." To create a PDF of the resume, select "Export" from the File menu, then select "Adobe PDF."
