How to Monitor Your Pets While You're at Work
Keeping a pet requires restraining its movements while you are at work to prevent mishaps from occurring. To monitor the area that your pet is restrained in while you are at work, use a wireless Internet Protocol-connected video camera that you can watch on your smartphone. These IP cameras are available from hobby shops and electronic stores and do not require any special expertise to set up and use.

Connect a USB cable to the USB sockets on the wireless IP video camera and a computer. Insert the installation disc into the computer. Let the installation program automatically appear on the screen before continuing.

Follow the menu commands to configure the camera to your wireless network. Enter specific information about the network in the text fields when they appear, for example, the name of the network and the password that you have set up for it. Continue to configure the camera by following the menu commands until the program says it is done. Quit the program. Disconnect the USB cable from the camera and computer.

Stand the camera on a table near the area where you keep your pet while you are at work. Plug the camera’s power cord into a wall outlet or, if the camera uses USB power, plug a USB cord into the camera and into a laptop placed on the table, then plug the laptop’s power cord into the outlet instead. Adjust the camera so that its lens is facing the area where the pet is kept.

Download the app to your smartphone that is also made by the manufacturer of the camera. Follow the menu commands on the smartphone’s screen to configure the app for the camera and your wireless network; this will involve entering specific data such as your network’s name, the password for the network and the serial number or special coding for the camera that makes it unique from others that were sold. Quit the app by returning to the home screen of the smartphone when the configuration is completed.

Tap the icon of the camera’s app to launch it. Tap the icon that turns the video streaming on. Watch the video being sent from the camera at home to see what your pet is up to while you are at work.
