Open the folder and use the scissors to cut along the fold to separate it into two pieces.
Create a unique book for your poetry using a manila folder and decorative paper. Handmade books are a fascinating and conversation inspiring gift you can make for a loved one. Use the book as your portfolio when seeking work or publishing contracts for your poetry, or as a coffee table piece in your sitting room. There is no limit to how creative you can be when making your own book, or how you choose to use the finished product.
Trim the edges of the folder to remove the tabs and create two equal sized pieces. These will be the front and back covers of the book.
Use the hole punch to place holes along one edge of both pieces of the folder. You can use two, three or four holes depending on the finished look you desire. The holes are where you will place the ties to hold the pages inside of the book.
Punch holes in your paper to match the holes you punched in the folder pieces. These will be the pages you write your poems on.
Decorate the folder any way you choose. Add embellishments around the edges using glue, paint the covers in any design or use stencils to draw on the covers. Personalizing the covers will make the book unique and will be easy for you to locate on a bookshelf. Allow the covers to dry completely before assembling the book.
Place the pages on top of the back cover that you created from one piece of the folder. Place the front cover, or the other piece of the folder, on top of the pages. Line up the holes you have punched in all the pieces as you go.
Insert the strings through the punched holes to bind all the pages to the cover. Tie the strings on the top of the book to add another decorative element. You can also tie them on the side of the book to keep them out of the way of your design.
