1
Shut off the water supply to the shower. Remove the handle on the tub faucet by taking out the handle's screw. If it is an Allen screw, use an Allen wrench; if it is a Phillips screw, use a Phillips screwdriver. Once the screw is out, pull the handle off.

2
Take off the faucet trim by unscrewing the trim screws with the screwdriver. Simply pull the trim off the wall by hand. Unscrew the cover, which is the part below the handle, and take it off.

3
Unscrew the bonnet nut or the cartridge retaining nut -- this is the part that fits on top of the mixing valve. Turn it counterclockwise to remove it.

Pull the mixing valve out of the center of the faucet. Remove all gaskets inside the faucet's body cavity and replace them. Put the new mixing valve into the faucet body. Replace the bonnet or retaining nut.
