How to Increase the Water Pressure in an Upstairs Shower Well
Low water pressure in an upstairs shower well is frustrating, particularly when you are in a hurry to get in and out of the shower. Inadequate water pressure means that the spray of water coming out of the shower head is less than in other showers downstairs, sometimes resulting in only a trickle of water. This is annoying when you are trying to rinse out your shampoo or remove the soap from your body. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Shut off all water faucets in your home. Read the water meter once you do this. Go back two hours later to read the meter again. If there is an increase on the meter, it is likely that you have a water leak. Repairing the leak helps the water pressure.
-
2
Check the water valves on your home to ensure they are tightly in the "Off" position. One of the valves is in the exterior water faucet. This is typically in the front of your home. The other valve is in the meter box.

3
Alter your schedule if you feel the low water pressure is due to peak usage during the time you normally shower. If two or more neighbors are outside watering their lawns, doing laundry or showering at the same time, this is usually the cause of low water pressure.
-
4
Hire a plumber if you live in an older home with galvanized iron pipes. Mineral deposits buildup over time in this type of pipe. This reduces the interior diameter of the pipe and decreases the water flow. Sometimes pressure regulators need replacing and the plumber can inspect this device as well.

5
Remove the shower head from the pipe if you think it may have a water restricter. Take out any existing screws with a screwdriver and then twist the shower head off. Turn on the faucet to see if the water flows well. If so, look inside the area and remove any rubber gasket or plug. This is the restrictor that reduces the flow of water. Screw the shower head back on and you should have better water pressure.

Tips & Warnings
Install a shower head aerator if the other remedies do not solve the problem. This adds air to the water flow, thus making it feel as if you have more pressure.
