How to Launch Hyper-V

How to Launch Hyper-V thumbnail
Set up a virtual machine on your Windows Server using Hyper-V.

Hyper-V is a virtualization platform for 2008 R2 Windows servers. Server work, in general, should be undertaken by experienced and knowledgeable IT professionals. However, launching Hyper-V and setting up your first virtual machine is not too complicated, and anyone with basic knowledge of virtual machines and Windows servers should have little trouble doing so. You'll also want knowledge and experience of virtual hard disks.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Start menu on the machine on which you have Hyper-V installed. Open the "Administrative Tools" folder, and then click the "Hyper-V Manager" icon.

    • 2

Locate the "Actions" panel, by default on the right side of the window. Click "New," and then select "Virtual Machine" from the drop-down menu. This will launch the "Virtual Machine Wizard" window.

    • 3

Read the introductory message. If you do not want to see this message in the future, check the "Do not show this page again" box. Click the "Next" button.

    • 4

Enter a name for the virtual machine. If you want the virtual machine to be located in a different location, check the "Store the virtual machine in a different location" box and enter the new location. Click the "Next" button.

    • 5

Enter how much memory you want to assign to the virtual machine. Click the "Next" button.

    • 6

Click the drop-down "Connection" menu. Select a network adapter for your virtual machine. Click the "Next" button.

    • 7

Select "Create a virtual hard disk," "Use an existing virtual hard disk" or "Attach a virtual hard disk later." If you select "Create a virtual hard disk," enter the necessary information in the supplied text fields. If you select "Use an existing virtual hard disk," click the "Browse" button and select the pre-existing virtual hard disk. Click the "Next" button.

    • 8

Decide how you want to install an operating system on your virtual machine, and select one of the available options. To put this off for the time being, select "Install an operating system later." Click the "Finish" button. This will create your virtual machine.
