1
Brush or comb the hair fully before making any cuts. Use a detangling comb if the hair is long or unkempt to remove any tangles.
-
2
Leave the hair longer if it is thick and wavy at the same time. Trim the ends with scissors to an even length. Use the scissors to shape the hair on top and the sides to match the shape of the face.

3
Use thinning shears to eliminate some of the hair volume on top and on the sides to create a layered look. Use electric clippers equipped with a 1-inch or less clipper guide attachment to cut the hair closer to the scalp, ears and neck. Use scissors to even the hair around the neck line.

4
Create different styles after cutting by using hair gel or spray. Cut the hair close with either scissors or clippers, then apply gel to the tips of the hair to create a spiky look.

5
Cut the hair on the top of the head less than on the back and sides to style a pompadour or duck's tail. Leave the hair on top at least 2 inches long -- about 1 inch longer than the rest of the head. Coat the hair on top of the head with pomade and comb it back and to the side with some lift right in the front. The hair on the sides should also be slicked back to a point at the back of the head, which is then combed downward.
