Instructions

    • 1

Lay the peasant skirt out on a flat work surface. Align the bottom hem on the front and back of the skirt to make it straight.

    • 2

Use a measuring tape to measure the portion of the peasant skirt you want to take off. Lay a yard stick across the bottom of the skirt, on top of the ruffle so the portion to be trimmed is sticking out.

    • 3

Draw a line across the ruffle along the edge of the yard stick using tailor's chalk. Repeat this process on the back of the skirt. Then, cut away the excess ruffle fabric from the skirt.

    • 4

Transfer the skirt to the ironing board, and iron a new 1/2-inch-wide hem around the skirt's ruffle. Pin the ironed hem in place.

    • 5

Guide the hem under the sewing machine's presser foot. Sew a straight stitch along the hem and around the skirt bottom. Reverse the stitching for half an inch to secure the stitch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hold the fabric taut as you sew to prevent gathers.

  • Use invisible thread or thread that matches the color of the peasant skirt.

  • Shorten a peasant skirt 2 inches at a time to ensure the finished length isn't too short.

  • Craft or white school chalk can be used in place of tailor's chalk.
