How to Create Movie Quality Zombie Make Up for Women

How to Create Movie Quality Zombie Make Up for Women thumbnail
Apply professional-looking zombie makeup for your costume.

Rotting and peeling flesh, oozing and clotting blood, and myriad crusty wounds are the gruesome and telltale images we envision when we hear the word zombie. You can create your own female zombie similar to those seen in modern horror films. Make your zombie character for costumes or theatrical presentations, using a variety of supplies and a few techniques. Instead of using makeup to turn a woman into a made-up beauty, use these special effects to turn an otherwise lovely woman into one of the horrifying undead.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Plan the design of the scars, lesions, drips and gouges you want, and determine where you will position them. Gather the appropriate materials needed to create each of these textures. Tear, shred and crumble toilet paper and paper towels into small pieces, to use for creating shedding skin, scars and lesions.

    • 2

Paint a thin layer of latex on the skin with a foam craft brush. The latex will shrink slightly as it starts to dry. This layer is your second coat of skin, and become the canvas for adding texture and dimension.

    • 3

Create a scar with the ripped paper, along the chin, neck and collarbones, as well as on the face. Apply the paper to the skin while the liquid latex is still moist. Build up layers of ripped papers on the skin, creating uneven and jagged edges with the paper. For each layer you add, brush liquid latex over area. The liquid latex dries to the skin, keeping the layers in place.

    • 4

Pull up the edges of the scar slightly, to create shredding skin, and use a toothpick to create indentations for open wounds and crevices.

    • 5

Cover the completed scar with a final layer of liquid latex. Let it set for about 5 minutes.

    • 6

Apply a base coat of cream makeup with a foam brush. Use a natural shade to blend into your skin, or white to give it a deathly appearance.

    • 7

Apply black costume makeup to the inside of open wounds, using foam craft brushes, along the inner edge of crevices and around the mouth.

    • 8

Create dark circles around the entire eye, starting with a line of black makeup completely encircling the eye. Blend the black out onto the lid and slightly toward the cheeks.

    • 9

Dust the makeup lightly with baby powder. Sprinkle the powder on a soft, disposable cloth or paper towel, and pat gently to help set the makeup.

    • 10

Apply fake blood, letting it drip from some wounds and gouges, and spattering over other areas. Allow blood to run down the neck and onto clothing; streak it through the hairline near the face for dramatic impact. Add brown powder makeup or eye shadow to the blood for a clotted appearance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use only tools and materials that are disposable after use. Costume makeup clumps on brushes and sponges, making them unusable.

  • Test any product you are not familiar with before applying to your skin. Place a drop on the inside of your arm, and let it set for several minutes, to test for any adverse reactions such as swelling or reddening of the skin.
