How to Adjust a Prefix to Domain A Record

Your domain's A Record tells other computers on the Internet where to find your domain. You also have CNAME records associated with your domain that can have prefixes that tell others specific places to go for some functions. If you need to adjust your A Record prefixes, you need to make sure that the A Record is correct and then change the CNAME prefixes associated with it. The process is different but similar for different hosting providers.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your account with your Web hosting provider.

    • 2

Navigate to the host's domain management page and select the domain you want to edit. Look for "DNS Settings" or "Advanced DNS Settings."

    • 3

Check the A Record to ensure that it points to the correct IP address. Click "CNAME." Enter a "Host Name" or "Alias." Enter a "Value" or "Destination," that contains the prefix you want to use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact your hosting provider, if you cannot determine how to edit DNS settings on its service.
