How to Make a Heavy Curtain for Theater

Heavy curtains add a professional feel to the stage.

Velour is a woven fabric often used for stage curtains. Stage lighting emphasizes its rich luster. In heavier weights, it also can absorb sound. You can choose from cotton or synthetic velour; both are available in a variety of weights and colors. The exact material you choose is a matter of personal preference. However, since the stage curtain is typically used for a variety of productions, a solid color is often preferable. A rich, dark color, such as burgundy or blue, is a common choice. In contrast, some theaters choose gold or striped curtains.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length you desire for your curtain. Check the tag or measure the length of existing curtain. If no curtain exists, measure from the floor to the bottom of the track that will hold the curtains. Add 9 inches to the length for a 3-inch hem on the top and a 6-inch hem on the bottom.

    • 2

Measure the existing curtain for width. If there is no existing curtain, measure from the center of the stage to the far edge of the stage. Increase this number by the desired fullness; 75 to 100 percent is common. A larger fullness percentage results in deeper pleats in the curtain. For example, a 60-inch width with 100 percent fullness should measure a 120 inches wide. You will need two of these panels to cover the stage.

    • 3

Figure how many fabric lengths you need to achieve your desired width. Subtract 2 inches from your chosen material's width -- usually 54 inches -- for seam allowances. Divide your curtain's total width by this number; that is, the number of fabric lengths you will need for each curtain panel. Place any uneven width on the far end of stage.

    • 4

Cut the number of lengths necessary, as determined in Step 3. Pin them together and sew with a 1-inch seam. Sew a 3-inch hem on the left and right sides. Add a 6-inch hem at the bottom.

    • 5

Mark the desired number of pleats evenly across the curtain's width. Pin the pleats and stitch into place. Add a 3-inch hem to the curtain's top.

    • 6

Construct a second panel, identical to the first for the other half of the stage.

    • 7

Insert the grommets or snap clips as needed to hang on your tracks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because velour appears to change color depending on how you view it, it's important that you have the nap in all your lengths running in the same direction.

  • Use your pleats to hide the seams that join the fabric lengths.

  • You will need a large sewing area to accommodate the size of the curtains.

  • As the curtains are heavy, you may want to reinforce the top hem with nylon webbing.
