How to Replace Your Kindle Shell

The Amazon Kindle has a sturdy, two-part shell resistant to cracking. Replacing the Kindle shell requires a complete teardown of the device. The logic board has numerous small Phillips screws. Organization of all parts during disassembly is vital.

      Position a soft cloth on the work area and place the Kindle face-down on it.

      Insert a metal spudger into the seam that runs along the bottom of the Kindle.

      Pry the bottom of the back cover from the Kindle. Pull the released portion of the back cover from the Kindle and insert a plastic spudger between the front and rear cases.

      Insert the metal spudger along the side of the Kindle between the front and rear covers. Pry outward gently with the spudger to release the clips that run along the perimeter of the Kindle.

      Pull the back cover from the Kindle. Remove the two screws securing the battery to the logic board with the Phillips #0 screwdriver.

      Pry the two gaskets in the battery holder from the Kindle. Remove the screws holding the black 3G modem in place.

      Remove the screws holding the logic board in place.

      Disconnect the friction connector, located at the bottom left of the Kindle, withthe plastic spudger.

      Disconnect the flex-ribbon connectors located along the perimeter of the logic board. Disconnect the display connector from the logic board.

      Remove the speaker connector with the metal spudger. The speaker connector has two red wires leading to a white PC connector attached to the logic board.

      Remove the four screws from the hinge power connector. Remove the logic board from the Kindle.

      Unfasten the screws securing the screen in place. Remove the screen from the Kindle. Remove the keyboard.

      Position the top portion of the replacement shell face-down on the work surface. Perform the disassembly steps in reverse order for the new shell.
