How to Transfer Dump Truck Tarps

How to Transfer Dump Truck Tarps thumbnail
Transfer dump trucks differ from standard dump trucks.

A transfer dump truck is capable of hauling a much larger load than a standard dump truck and is often used to haul such things as gravel or rock. Whereas a normal dump truck only has one container, the transfer dump truck has a second container in back of the first. The operator disconnects the trailer, then dumps the main load. Later he returns for the load in the second container. There is typically a tarp that is secured onto the top of the dump truck which prevents any of the load from blowing into traffic or spilling out. When the truck gets to its stops, the tarp needs to be removed and transferred to the next load.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that the parking brake on the dump truck is secured when you come to the drop location. Walk to the back of the truck to disconnect the air brake coupler for the trailer brake, as well as the running light and brake light connector.

    • 2

Release the lock of the dump truck's trailer hitch in the back of the truck. Be sure that the trailer hitch arm is cleared to one side of the truck so that you avoid dumping any of your load onto it. One the arm is out of the way, place it on the ground until you are ready to rehitch it.

    • 3

Climb onto the dump truck where the tarp is secured along the sides. Carefully unlatch each of the tie downs and latches that secure the tarp to the dump truck.

    • 4

Remove the tarp slowly from the back of the dump truck. Ease it slowly over the load to ensure that the load does not come out with the tarp. Once the tarp is completely off the truck and on the ground, roll it or fold it up neatly. With the tarp folded or rolled up, place it to the side and out of the way.

    • 5

Proceed with the dumping process by backing the dump truck to the site where you wish to dump. Locate the button that reads "Forward" and press it to engage the dump.

    • 6

Press the "Back" button to bring the dump truck back to its original starting position. Return to the driver's seat. Release the parking brake and drive forward in order to connect the trailer hitch. Set the parking brake again.

    • 7

Replace the tarp by first unfolding it then rolling it back onto the truck. Secure all the tie downs.
