Submit professional head shots along with your entry application.

Beauty pageants are shows that display toddlers, little girls, teenagers and women who exemplify good looks and special talents. In order to model in a pageant, you must be willing to pay the entrance fees and do what it takes to win the grand prize. Modeling in a pageant is not simply a matter of walking across the stage in an evening gown or swimsuit; it requires contestants to practice their posture, walks, smiles and talents, which they will be showcasing to judges and audiences.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete the entrance application form for the beauty pageant in which you wish to participate. A variety of beauty pageants exist, and they are presented by several different companies. Find a pageant in your area or apply for a national pageant. Furnish the presenting company with all the necessary materials it wishes to see, such as photographs or video of your modeling abilities.

    • 2

Submit the appropriate fees for the entrance application. Some pageants require nonrefundable deposits, processing fees, a fee for modeling in the pageant and separate fees for modeling in smaller pageants that lead up to the final one. There are also optional expenses into which you can buy for makeovers, on-site coaching and professional photo shoots.

    • 3

Take modeling lessons. These allow you to learn the tricks for walking, maintaining straight posture, posing and smiling. They also help you incorporate graceful gestures and give you practice so that you feel comfortable with the various positions.

    • 4

Maintain your physical wellness and appearance. Look your best for the pageant by eating healthy; refraining from alcohol and smoking; getting enough sleep and regular exercise; and keeping your skin moisturized and your hair silky soft. Such dedication increases your chances of winning the judges' approval onstage.

    • 5

Select a talent to showcase, such as cheerleading, playing a musical instrument, singing or dancing. Practice your talent on a regular basis so that you are familiar with the routine you will need to perform for the judges and audience.

    • 6

Act as naturally as you can when you are onstage. Pay attention to where you step so that you do not bump into other candidates or lose your footing. Do not look at the floor when you are onstage, even if you feel inclined to do so; instead, keep your head up and your eyes fixed on the audience or cameras.

    • 7

Charm the audience and judges with some character in your presence. Sway your hips slightly when you move while keeping your arms naturally by your sides. You may even place a hand on your hip while you pose.

Tips & Warnings

  • On pageant day, stay focused on your own appearance and routine. Try not to concern yourself too much with what other contestants look like or are doing; otherwise, you may lose your concentration.
