How to Restore Severely Tarnished Sterling
Whenever silver objects, such as sterling silverware, come into contact with anything, they develop a chemical reaction and silver sulfide forms on the surface, darkening the silver and developing into tarnish. For a light coating of tarnish, wipe the item with a soft cloth. For severely tarnished sterling silver, take more drastic steps to restore the silver to its former shimmer. Does this Spark an idea?

Use a clean cloth to gently buff the item after removing the tarnish.
Aluminum and Baking Soda

4
Use an aluminum roasting pan or a deep aluminum foil-lined baking dish.

Place the tarnished sterling silver item into the pan so that the object touches the aluminum.

6
Add boiling water to the pan until the tarnish silver item is completely submerged.
