How to Make a Saddle Roll thumbnail
Warm, washable blankets are best for saddle rolls.

Cowboys and hunters on horseback must take their bed with them in the form of a saddle roll that can be attached behind the saddle. Aside from blankets for warmth, a saddle roll needs to include a protective cover that keeps the blankets free of dust and insects as well as doubling as a ground cover. Making your own saddle roll is a simple task as long as you have the correct supplies.

Lay the tarp flat on the ground and place your blankets, foam pad and pillow in the middle on the top half.

    • 2

Fold the sides of the tarp over the bedding and then the top and bottom.

    • 3

Roll the tarp and blankets tightly starting at the end without the pillow. Secure the rolled tarp with rope or bungee cords.

    • 4

Attach the saddle roll securely to the back of your saddle with saddle ties.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the tarp is clean on the side you lay your bedding on.

  • If you wish, you can leave the foam pad and/or the pillow out of the saddle roll to make it smaller.
