How to Make Advanced Sigs With GIMP

How to Make Advanced Sigs With GIMP thumbnail
Create a sig tag specifically for work-related emails.

To make a signature tag for digital correspondences such as email, use the free software GIMP. The free editor will allow you to create an advanced, multi-layer workbook, which can be flattened into one layer and saved as a picture file. Use a standard extension such as JPG, which can be inserted into a wide-variety of software suites. Your sig tag can be colorful or conservative, playful or sophisticated; the design scheme is completely up to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch GIMP and create a new workbook by clicking "File" and "New." Insert custom dimensions such as a width of 600 pixels and a height of 100 pixels. Click "Advanced Options" and choose a "Fill Width" of "White." Click "OK," and your workbook will load.

    • 2

Select the "Filters" tab and click "Decor" and "Add Border." A settings dialog will appear. Insert "10" for the X and Y border sizes. Click the "Border Color" box and select a shade from the given options. Click "OK" in the settings dialog and the border will be inserted.

    • 3

Click the "Text Tool" in the main toolbox and click within the workbook to launch a text box. Use the bottom-half of the toolbox to adjust the font, size and color of the text box. Type the first line of your signature tag into the text box such as your first and last name. If you need to re-position the text, click the "Move Tool" and double-click and drag your text to where you want it to sit.

    • 4

Click the "Text Tool" again and click where you want a second text line to appear. Insert your professional title along with your company name, if desired. You can change the font, size and color of this text box without affecting the previous box inserted.

    • 5

Click "File" and "Open as Layer" to insert a graphic of your company logo, if desired. Re-size the logo as needed by clicking "Layer" and "Scale Layer." Click the down arrow to decrease the size of your inserted graphic, clicking "OK" when satisfied.

    • 6

Right-click in the Layers dialog on any layer and click "Flatten Image." Your background, border and text boxes will all be merged into a single layer.
