How to Do a Classy Side Ponytail
The side ponytail is a modern twist on the classic ponytail, but that doesn't mean all versions of this side-leaning style are equally elegant. The awkwardly tight side ponytail of the 1980s, for example, is not the same as the glamorous, low-slung number that celebrities such as Rose Byrne and Jessica Simpson favor. The trendy, chic variation on the low side ponytail uses the natural part of your hair instead of forcing it into a tightly contrived and uncomfortable style. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Massage a quarter-sized dollop of pomade or defrizzing serum through the bottom half of your damp or dry hair using your hands. The serum prevents frizzing and loose fly-away strands.
-
2
Part your hair on the right using the wide-toothed comb. A side part lets your side ponytail fall more naturally than the horizontal, comb-around technique of the side ponytail in the 1980s.

3
Gather your hair over your left shoulder with your nondominant hand. Maintain the left-side position and secure the nonrubber hair elastic around your gathered tresses. Keep your side ponytail loose and graceful by tying the elastic at least 1 inch away from the scalp.

Take a half-inch section of hair from the bottom of your ponytail and wrap it around the elastic once or twice. Tuck the remaining hair section into the underside of the elastic. Wrapping hair around the elastic conceals the hair-tie, making your side ponytail look polished and glamorous.

Tips & Warnings
Place decorative clips or barrettes wherever you see loose or stubborn pieces of hair after finishing your side ponytail.
Spray a few shots of flexible hairspray over your entire head if your hair is especially fine or frizzes easily.
