Getting Strapless Clothing to Stay Up

Getting Strapless Clothing to Stay Up thumbnail
Wear a strapless dress with confidence.

Strapless clothing shows off the neck, shoulders and collarbone, but women sometimes avoid it because they are afraid it will not stay up. The embarrassment of having a strapless top or dress slip down and the hassle of having to check and pull up the top periodically do not seem to be worth the effort. However, there are several ways to increase the chances that your strapless clothing will stay in place, even if you are attending an event where you will be active.

Things You'll Need

  • Strapless bra

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase strapless clothing that fits correctly and that is tight above your chest. You do not want it to pinch your skin, but it should be tight enough that it takes a fair amount of force to pull it down far enough to embarrass you. If possible, choose clothing made with a fabric that does not stretch much.

Select a strapless bra that fits snugly and has nonslip material on the inside. The bra can also make your chest bigger, which will help the dress stay up.

    • 3

Cut several 2-inch strips of fashion tape, which is a double-sided tape that sticks well to fabrics and skin. Place the strips inside your dress or shirt along the top seam. Choose a few key locations, including the center of the back, under each arm and above each breast. Leave the backing on the tape for now to keep the second sticky side covered.

    • 4

Put on your strapless bra and the strapless shirt or dress. Figure out exactly where you want the top to sit for the duration of the day and check that it looks good from all angles.

    • 5

Peel off the back of each piece of tape and stick the dress or shirt to your skin in the correct place. Work with one piece at a time so you have control over where you stick each one.
