How to Decorate a Workplace Hall Alcove
An alcove is a recess in a piece of architecture. Your office may have an alcove that doesn’t serve a useful purpose, and yet you want to make use of the space in the most economical way possible. While you might not be able to cram a cubical into the hall alcove, you can decorate the space and even make it functional. Many decorations are small enough to fit almost anywhere, and the alcove can easily serve as a storage space.

1
Determine whether you want to use the alcove as a purely decorative space or to serve a particular function. When the alcove serves a function, you should decorate with this function in mind -- such as using decorative shelves for extra storage space.
-
2
Paint the alcove a contrasting color, if you want the space to stand out from the rest of the building. Paint the alcove a darker color to make it look smaller. Or paint it a similar color as the rest of the room, to increase the perceived size of the alcove.

3
Consider placing a small and flat object in the alcove, such as a mirror or a framed picture.
-
4
Set up a larger alcove as a small office, giving you an extra work space for staff members. If it's near an office, place a comfortable chair in the alcove – or in front, if the alcove is small – as a place for visitors to sit and wait. Alternatively, you could install a hook there for visitors to hang their coats before entering the office.
-
5
Fill the alcove with holiday decorations. For instance, place cobwebs or a classic jack-o'-lantern in the alcove for Halloween.
-
6
Add a fountain or aquarium to the alcove. A fountain increases humidity in dry offices and can provide a soothing noise that reduces stress. Watching fish swim can provide stress relief.
-
7
Place a bulletin board in the alcove, and fill it with a mixture of useful and fun items. Include cartoons, jokes and uplifting images, mixed in with important announcements.
-
8
Include toys and games in the alcove, as well as light-hearted books. Toys and games may seem like a waste of time, but creative professionals can use these diversions to stimulate new ideas and relieve stress.
-
9
Place a drapery over the alcove, to create a storage nook. Use the space to store things that aren't visually appealing, such as cleaning supplies or other office necessities.

Tips & Warnings
The alcove is often an out-of-the-way place, allowing you to include decorations that may normally interfere with office operations. This includes objects that can easily be tripped over or bumped into, such as plants.
