How to Rough in Plumbing for a Toilet

Designing the plumbing installation for a toilet is called the rough in. This process is basically just the beginning of the process, where the installer figures out where the drain and flange go. It's dictated by the size of the toilet and its rough-in dimensions, which are listed on the product specifications, part of your toilet's owner's manual. Before you begin, be sure to read this manual carefully and note the rough-in measurements listed there. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check the specifications on your toilet manual for the rough in. Note the distance from the wall required to install the drain. Decide where to install the toilet in the bathroom.

    • 2

Measure the distance specified in your manual from the wall behind your installation point -- in other words, the wall that will be behind the toilet once it is installed. Take the measurement from the wall and not the molding. If the molding is in the way, remove it with a crowbar and then take the measurement. In almost all cases, this distance is 12 inches.

    • 3

Make a mark on the floor with a pencil at your measurement. At this mark, measure at least 15 inches from the side wall. Make another mark here that overlaps the first mark. The crossing marks indicate the center of the drain hole.

    • 4

Set your toilet flange over your mark and trace around it to draw a roughed-in drain hole on your floor. Double-check the measurements. The center of this hole should be 12 inches from the back wall (or whatever measurement your toilet manual suggests) and 15 inches from the side wall.
