How to Make a Full Size Aluminum Hockey Goal

How to Make a Full Size Aluminum Hockey Goal thumbnail
A regulation hockey goal is still fairly small.

A regulation hockey goal is 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. The hockey goal is attached to the ice with lime green, 10-inch pegs. The goal posts and crossbar are red, and the other pieces of the hockey goal are white. You can make your own regulation hockey goal using basic welding skills, aluminum piping and aluminum pipe fittings. The most difficult part of construction is measuring the pipes to ensure they produce a goal that's the correct size.

Things You'll Need

  • Aluminum pipes, 2 3/8 inch wide
  • Metal saw
  • Pipe bending machine
  • Aluminum elbow pipe fittings, 2 3/8 inch wide
  • Welding iron
  • Welding apron
  • Welding mask
  • Welding gloves
  • Regulation padding
  • Regulation hockey net

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one aluminum pipe to a length of 6 feet, two pipes to a length of 116 inches, and two pipes to a length of 4 feet.

    • 2

Bend the 116-inch pipes with a 20-inch corner radius, using a pipe bending machine. Make sure there is 72 inches of flat pipe between the two curves. The two pipes should look like a rectangle with rounded corners, when placed together.

    • 3

Connect the 4-foot pipes to the 6-foot pipe, using elbow fittings. Connect the rounded pipes to the bottom of the 4-foot pipes with elbow fittings.

    • 4

Cut a pipe to fit between the two curved pipes. Cut the ends at a 45-degree angle, so they fit the curvature of the rounded pipes.

    • 5

Weld the pipe to center of the curved pipes as a crossbar stabilizer. Wear a welding mask, gloves, apron and other safety gear when welding.

    • 6

Fit the padding over the pipes. Knot the hockey net to the holes in the padding, to attach the net to the goal.
