Instructions

    • 1

Take the jacket off. Getting the zipper unstuck is easier if you're not wearing it. Pull your arms out and lift it over your head. Ask for help from a friend or family member if your jacket is zipped all the way up, which may make it very hard to remove on your own.

    • 2

Check for bunched fabric. If the material of your jacket is stuck on the inside, it may be hard to get it to go back down. If this is the case, gently pull the fabric out of the zipper as you wiggle it up and down.

Rub pencil lead on the zipper teeth on both sides. The lead acts as a dry lubricant, allowing the zipper to slide up and down.

    • 4

Use soap to lubricate the zipper teeth. Rub a bar of soap on both sides of the zipper, which may allow enough give to get it unstuck and working properly again.

    • 5

Try candle wax. It allows you to slide the zipper up and down more easily and protects the teeth of the zipper from damage. Apply the wax on the teeth and gently maneuver the zipper until the breaks free.

    • 6

Soak your zipper. Allowing your jacket to soak in vinegar or salt water may be effective for a zipper that won't give with any other treatments. This method isn't recommended for delicate fabrics or leather because the vinegar or salt water may damage them. If you want to try this technique, apply a small amount of vinegar or salt water to an area of the jacket where it won't be seen and watch for any type of damage.

Tips & Warnings

  • Olive oil and WD-40 are other lubricant options that may remedy a stuck zipper, but both could leave grease stains on your jacket, so use this method with care.
