DirecTV, a subscription-based satellite television service, gives customers access to their favorite shows, sporting events, news and movies. DirecTV also offers high-definition programming and on-demand content, as well as a DVR that records shows when you are not available to watch.       Sign up for the DirecTV service. Almost any building with a clear view of the southern sky is eligible for service, including houses, apartments and condos, as well as RVs. When you sign up, you’ll make an appointment for an installer to come to your home and set up the satellite dish. If you prefer, you can install the satellite dish yourself.

      Press the "Guide" button on the DirecTV remote to see a list of available programming. The guide shows you scheduled programming for three days before it airs. Use the arrow keys to select a program. Press "OK" or "Enter" to go to the selected channel if the show is currently airing; if not, pressing "OK" displays additional information about the show.

      Press the "Active" button on the remote to see a five-day weather forecast for your area as well as horoscopes, lottery results and current pay-per-view offerings.

      Set up a favorite channels list to quickly access the channels you watch most. Press "Menu" on the remote. If you have an HD-DVR, scroll to "Parental, Fav's & Setup" and select this option. Select "Favorites" and then select "Set up Custom 1." Choose the channels that you want to add to the list. You can switch between your favorites list and the general channel list at any time.

      Check your DirecTV TVmail to learn about upcoming promotions, special offers and other announcements. Press "Menu" and then select "TVmail" to see your messages.

      Watch YouTube videos with DirecTV. Press "Menu" and select "Smart Search." Input any search criteria. Matching programming results appear along with a list of YouTube videos that match your search.

      Use the "You Might Like" feature to find new shows to enjoy. Select a favorite show and press "INFO" on the remote. Select "More Info" and "You Might Like." This displays a list of similar shows.

      Set up parental controls by pressing "Menu." Select "Parental, Fav's & Setup" and then select "Parental Controls." Select "Edit Settings." Choose the content that you want to block. Select a PIN if this is your first time setting up controls. You need to enter your PIN to view this content when parental controls are active.

      Use your DVR to schedule shows to record. You can record a show you are currently watching by pressing "Record" on the remote. To record a future show, find the show using the guide or search for it using Smart Search. Select the show title and press "Record."
