Test the jump drive on another computer and determine if the drive is truly write protected.

Launch the Windows Registry Editor utility to change USB drive write protection settings when changes are blocked on a forced format jump drive. Executing a force format does not write protect jump drives; however, Windows Registry settings may prevent write access to the drive. Modify the “StorageDevicePolicies” registry key to remove write protection from the drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Click “Start” and “Search.” Type “regedit” in the Search box, then right-click the “regedit” icon that appears and click “Run as Administrator.”

    • 2

Navigate to the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\” directory in the Registry Editor window.

    • 3

Find the “StorageDevicePolicies” item in the Control directory. If the “StorageDevicePolicies” is not listed, right-click the “Control” directory, click “New” and “Key,” type “StorageDevicePolicies” and press “Enter.”

    • 4

Click the “StorageDevicePolicies” key and double-click the “WriteProtect” item in the right pane. If the “WriteProtect” item is not present, right-click on an empty space in the right pane, click “New” and “DWord,” then type “WriteProtect” in the "Value name" field.
Enter “0” into the “Value data” field and click “OK.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 for each “StorageDevicePolicies” key in the Control directory.

    • 6

Click the “X” in the Registry Editor window's upper right corner to close the window.
