Preparations
-
1
Place the shirt on a clothes hanger and hang it in a spot in which you can work freely. Hang the shirt in front of a door or wall and hold the shirt in place with pushpins.
-
2
Select paints, for either airbrushing or free-hand painting, that match the shadow tones you want, typically shades of gray. The more accurate the color that you select, the more realistic the shadow will be.
-
-
3
Compare the colors to a real shadow, if needed. Hold your hand in front of a surface, with light shining behind you. Make sure your hand is positioned like the item to which you are adding shadow on your T-shirt. Take note of the levels of colors your shadow creates. Make note of where the shadow starts to fade into a lighter, almost white color. Alternatively, refer to a photo that has a similar shape and shadow.
Airbrushing
-
4
Draw the desired shadow shape free-hand onto felt with a fabric marker. Refer to the photo or hand shadow, if applicable.
-
5
Poke a hole in the felt with the scissors, on one edge of the shadow shape, and cut the shape out of the felt. This will create the stencil.
-
6
Place the stencil on the T-shirt in the desired spot.
-
7
Hold the stencil steady and place masking tape around all four sides to make a secure frame. This also prevents paint from spraying onto the other areas of the shirt.
-
8
Spray the paint over the stencil with the air brush. Repeat this step as needed to fill in the shape of the shadow. Fade out the color toward the bottom portions of the shadow and add white paint to the edge.
-
9
Remove the tape carefully and peel off the stencil.
-
10
Allow the paint to dry before moving or wearing the shirt.
Painting
-
11
Add your paints to the palette. Use two separate palettes, if possible, one for the regular design paints and one for the shadow paints. This gives you ample room to blend the shadow colors.
-
12
Paint the design onto the shirt, minus the shadow portion, and allow that shape to dry.
-
13
Wash the brush in the rinsing cup thoroughly to remove all paint.
-
14
Paint the shadow starting with the darkest area, closest to the design. Use the darkest shade you selected for this portion.
-
15
Slowly fade the colors, referring to the photo or to the shadow your hand cast, depending on your preference. Blend the colors to get a realistic fade. Add white into the grays to get different shades.
-
16
Add white paint to the edge of the shadow.
-
17
Allow the paint to dry before moving or wearing the shirt.

Tips & Warnings
Remove some of the stickiness from masking tape by applying and removing it quickly from clothes or any piece of fabric. This will make it easier to remove the tape from the shirt when you are done airbrushing.
