How to Troubleshoot JPEG 2000

The JPEG 2000 image compression standard uses both lossy and lossless techniques to compress images. JPEG 2000 files are contained within the .JPX file extension. If you cannot open images that use this standard, you must either install a JPEG 2000 compatible program or associate the JPX file extension to work with such a program.

Instructions

    • 1

Install an application that has the ability to view JPEG 2000 files. Windows 7 does not provide native support for JPEG 2000 files, which means that you cannot view them with the Windows Photo Viewer. Applications that can open JPEG 2000 files include IrfanView and Adobe Photoshop.

    • 2

Associate the JPX file format with your default JPEG 2000 viewing application. Incorrect file associations will prevent JPEG 2000 files from opening normally. Click “Start,” type “File Extensions” and press “Enter.” Select the “.JPX” extension and click the “Change Program” button. Select a JPEG 2000 viewing application such as IrfanView or Adobe Photoshop, and click “OK.”

    • 3

Restore the JPEG 2000 file to a previous version. Right-click the JPEG 2000 file, and select “Restore Previous Version.” Select a previous version of the file, and click “Restore” to perform the restoration. If the JPEG 2000 file was corrupted, restoring it will cause it to work now.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can install an image codec such as the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack to enable built-in support for JPEG 2000 files.
