How to Make a Bridge for Kindergarten

Children have a natural urge to build and explore, making bridge construction a useful lesson.

Kindergarteners don’t have a firm grasp on bridge engineering and physics, but they can still benefit from a brief lesson about bridge construction. Keep the bridge as simple as possible to keep the children interested. The simplicity of the bridge won’t make it the strongest construct available, but it will still have considerable strength the children can appreciate. Help the children through every step of the way to ensure the proper construction of the bridge.

Things You'll Need

• Wood rulers
• Wood craft sticks
• Glue

Instructions

1. Set two wood rulers side by side lengthwise. Set two wood craft sticks horizontally across the rulers. Move one craft stick to each end of the rulers.

2. Separate the rulers under the craft sticks so the outside edge of each ruler sits level with the edges of the two craft sticks. Glue the craft sticks to the rulers, placing glue between the rulers and the craft sticks.

3. Ask the children to set more craft sticks on top of the rules, between the two craft sticks you affixed to the edges of the rulers. Assist the children with lining up the craft sticks properly.

4. Glue the craft sticks to the rulers, placing glue between the rulers and the craft sticks. Allow the children to assist you with this step, but watch them carefully to ensure they don’t make a mess.

5. Allow the simple bridge to sit until the glue dries. Set the finished product over a gap between two tables. Show the children how the bridge can hold items without breaking.

Tips & Warnings

• Examine all the craft sticks to ensure they are strong and well-formed. The sticks should have a straight wood grain going lengthwise. They should be free of knots and warping as well.

• Don’t stretch the bridge over exceedingly long distances. It is too weak to withstand much strain.
